The topic of this month’s column, which is difficult to discuss, is the issue of increasingly prevalent addiction.

Headlines and the CDC reported that 2020 will be the most deadly year on record for drug overdose. According to Gallup, half of all US families are currently affected by addiction.

“Addiction is a treatable chronic medical disorder with complex interactions between brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experience,” said the American Society of Addiction Medicine. “People with addiction use substances, become obsessive, and engage in behaviors that often follow despite adverse consequences.”

You don’t expect certified accountants to experience the problem of addiction as part of their profession. But for the past three decades, I’ve witnessed the devastating effects of addiction on the client’s family.

I’ve seen heirs “blow away” millions of dollars of inheritance, fire long-term employees, and lose their businesses in search of cash because of their habits. Addictive children spent the hard-earned wealth built up over generations within a few years, sometimes with the help of abusive partners and psychofans.

I saw my parents betting on their home property and college funds that they had set aside for their children. One of the wealthiest elderly clients with a history of drunk driving killed an infant and made the child’s mother permanently disabled. I have witnessed my spouse spending his retirement savings and charging large taxes for drug use and shopping …….
